I’ve always loved the beginning/end of a year because I would scroll on youtube (or even tiktok) watching that year's fashion trend predictions, and this year is no exception. I’ve been researching for a while now and nothing else has been stuck on my mind if not buttons.
The first time that I thought about them was during a video of Susielola and Daughter of a Hoarder on 2024 fashion trends smash or pass, when they were talking about the mother of pearl buttons that were and still are kind of a big thing (or maybe it’s just my pinterest feed and my love for them). I think they mainly became popular because they give off office siren and grunge at the same time, maybe a bit of rockstar girlfriend as well.
It has been almost two months since that video and I cannot stop seeing buttons everywhere I go or in every media I consume. In her most recent video Emma Chamberlain has shown us her capsule wardrobe, and a lot of her top pieces featured buttons, she also highlighted the side neck buttons like in the shirt below(that I absolutely need!!!).
To truly understand if this is a micro-trend that is gonna go away in a few months or it is gonna last I started wondering if it is a trend that is out of the fashion world, and I know that I’m literally talking about buttons, but I’m looking for the ones that are there just to add something more and captivate the someone else’s eye. By out of the fashion world I mean: have I seen costume designs in movies that were used in a different way? or even is some celebrity wearing something like it?
The first thingh that came up to my mind is the new trending audio on tiktok with Lily Rose-Depp The first thing that came to my mind is the new trending audio on tiktok with Lily Rose-Depp ”trench coat buttoned to the top and these ballerina ass slippers”.
Not only has she always been a fashion icon, but after the success of “Nosferatu” she is now everywhere. I feel like she could experience with buttons more, especially with vintage pieces from Vivienne Westwood or Alexander Mcqueen, during the press tour since it kind of fit the aesthetic of it.
After watching “Wicked” I would also say that it has a lot of good references. When I first saw Elphaba coat and Glinda outfit in the first scene at university I was mesmerized. (I needed them both and if i don’t have them I might die.)
There is a New York Times’s article explaining the process behind Paul Tazewell costumes for wicked titled “Dressing for the Emerald City” “Dressing for the Emerald City” that in my opinion is very interesting to read if you’ve seen the movie and love fashion.
Looking at these costumes I cannot forget to mention the solo date I had a week ago at the Kunstmuseum in The Hagues where there is currently an exhibition called “Dior: A New Look” available until the 26 of January. Not only have I fallen deeply in love with Dior but I also couldn’t stop but notice the most elegant way of styling buttons. (I’ll insert below some of the pictures that I took and I am really sorry but they are not the best quality.)
I think the best way to find something like this would be to thrift it or to buy from small brands. Paloma Wool has a lot of great options for this type of clothes like the ”Donalti” top or the “Nura” tricot. Another brand could be Caspar The Label, with a big exclamation point for “The Poet Cardigan Charcoal” or “The Low Rise Pocket Belt”. To support artists you could also acquire something hand-made that I think it’s easy to find on Vinted, Depop or Etsy, but also thanks to Tiktok you could stumble across some gems like Colombine Knits with the “buttons” top. Unfortunatley while looking for the links of these items I noticed that they are all sold out, but maybe you could sign up to the newsletter or wait for what they are gonna create next.
I hope you enjoyed my insights and let me know if you want an entire 2025 trend prediction from me.
Lots of Love and Happy New Year,
Vitto★
I love button detailing!! I literally paid extra to add more of them to my wedding dress 😂
Why don't you create a clothing brand yourself?
